Ingredients

  • 2 pkg Betty Crocker* SuperMoist* Golden Cake Mix
  • Water, vegetable oil and eggs called for on cake mix boxes
  • 3 tubs (340 g) Betty Crocker™ Whipped Fluffy White Frosting
  • Neon pink gel food colour
  • 1 doll pick (7 inch/17.5 cm)
  • Pink decorating sugar
  • Edible pink pearls

Steps

  • 1
Heat oven to 325°F (160°C). Grease 1 1/2-quart/L ovenproof bowl (7 1/2 inches/19 cm across top) and two 8-inch (20 cm) round cake pans with shortening; coat with flour (do not use cooking spray).
  • 2
In large bowl, make cake batter as directed on boxes. (Both boxes of cake mix can be made at one time; do not increase beating time.) Pour 4 cups (1 L) batter into 1 1/2-quart/L bowl, and divide remaining batter among 2 pans (about 2 cups/500 mL per pan).
  • 3
Bake cake pans 30 to 35 minutes and bowl 59 to 63 minutes or until toothpick inserted in centre comes out clean. Cool 10 minutes. Remove cakes from pans and bowl. Cool completely, about 2 hours. Cut off rounded tops of cakes.
  • 4
Spoon frosting into large bowl. Stir in food colour until desired pink colour. Place one 8-inch (20 cm) cake on serving plate; spread 1/3 cup (75 mL) frosting over top. Top with second 8-inch (20 cm) cake; spread with 1/3 cup (75 mL) frosting. Top with rounded bowl cake layer, cut side down. Trim side of cake if necessary to make a tapered "skirt."
  • 5
Spread thin layer of frosting over side and top of layered cake to seal in crumbs. Freeze cake 30 to 45 minutes to set frosting.
  • 6
Spread frosting over cake as desired. Wrap doll pick's hair with plastic wrap; insert into centre of cake. Decorate with frosting, sprinkles and candy pearls as desired. Unwrap hair. Store cake loosely covered.

Expert Tips

  • Tip 1
It is a good idea to bake the 8-inch (20 cm) round cake layers and the bowl cake in two batches so your oven won’t be overcrowded. Simply cover and refrigerate batter in the mixing bowl while the first batch is baking. The batter will be cold so you will need to add an extra minute or two to the bake times given.
  • Tip 2
What’s a doll pick? It’s a cake topper (pick sticks into the cake) where the top half is a doll you put frosting on to look like the bodice of a ballgown (the cake is the doll’s skirt). If you don’t have a doll pick, you can use a toy fashion doll (11.5 inches/29 cm or smaller). Make sure you wrap the hair and lower half of the doll with plastic wrap and cut 1 3/4-inch (4.5 cm) diametre holes in centre of all cake layers to insert the doll into. Continue as directed above.
  • Tip 3
You can purchase a doll dress cake pan if you prefer. One 8-inch doll dress pan will hold 7 cups (1.75 L) batter (make cupcakes with any remaining batter).
  • Tip 4
Adding edible pearls to the cake is delicate work and a pair of tweezers is extremely helpful!
  • Tip 5
Unleash your inner fashion designer! Make the frosting any colour you like or perhaps divide the frosting into different bowls and make a multi-coloured creation.
