Ingredients

  • 1/2 lb (250 g) lean ground beef
  • 1 can (398 mL) Old El Paso* Refried Beans
  • 1/4 cup (50 mL) finely crushed CHEERIOS* cereal or saltine crackers
  • 2 tbsp (25 mL) barbecue sauce
  • 1/4 tsp (1 mL) pepper
  • 1 egg
  • Leaf lettuce, if desired
  • 5 whole-grain hamburger buns
  • 5 tsp (25 mL) barbecue sauce
  • Sliced tomatoes and onions, if desired

Steps

  • 1
Heat gas or charcoal grill. In large bowl, mix beef, beans, crushed cereal or crackers, 2 tbsp (25 mL) barbecue sauce, the pepper and egg. Shape into 5 patties, about 1/2-inch (1 cm) thick.
  • 2
Brush grill rack with vegetable oil. Place patties on grill. Cover grill; cook over medium heat 5 minutes. Turn; cook covered 5 to 6 minutes longer or until meat thermometer inserted in centre of patties reads 160°F (70 °C).
  • 3
Place lettuce and patties on bottom halves of buns. Spread each patty with 1 tsp (5 mL) barbecue sauce. Top with tomato and onion. Cover with bun tops.
