These rich and chewy bars of butterscotch goodness are extra-easy to make with cake mix and butterscotch caramel topping.
Sep 28, 2016

Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup (175 mL) butterscotch caramel topping
  • 1 box Betty Crocker™ SuperMoist™ butter pecan cake mix
  • 1/3 cup (75 mL) butter or margarine, softened
  • 1 egg
  • 1/4 teaspoon (1 mL) coarse salt, if desired

Steps

  • 1
Heat oven to 350°F (180°C) (325°F/160°C for dark or nonstick pan). In small bowl or 2-cup (500 mL) measuring cup, mix topping and 1 tablespoon (15 mL) of the dry cake mix. In large bowl, stir together remaining dry cake mix, the butter and egg, using fork, until crumbly. Reserve 1 cup (250 mL) crumb mixture. Using a piece of plastic wrap on crumb mixture, press remaining mixture in bottom and 1/2 inch (1.3 cm) up sides of ungreased 9-inch (23 cm) square pan; remove wrap
  • 2
Bake 12 minutes. Pour topping over crust to within 3/4 inch (2 cm) of edge. Sprinkle with reserved 1 cup (250 mL) crumb mixture.
  • 3
Bake 22 to 26 minutes or until light golden brown. Cool 10 minutes; loosen edges of crust with knife. Cool completely, about 50 minutes. Sprinkle with coarse salt. For bars, cut into 4 rows by 4 rows. Store covered.

Expert Tips

  • Tip 1
A plastic knife makes a clean, sharp cut for bars and brownies and is less likely to tear the crust.
